John 13: 34-35

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Good morning, how are you?
I am good, thank you for asking and you?
I’m good, thanks.
Well have a nice day – you too

Now is this what Christ meant to love one another as I loved you? If so I think we are all good, but just saying hi is it love or just being friendly? A thief, a murderer can say hi even our mother-in-laws can say hi. So that being said it’s not love.

A new commandment Jesus has given us – to Love one another as he loved us. Just thinking about it is a lot of stress, a lot of pressure. How can we being who we are, Human, full of sin, to love one another the way Christ loved us. We all know that there is no way we can love the way Jesus loved us. It’s not easy to love or even care for the person next to. When Jesus calls us to love one another he is calling us to share the love he has shown and given us. Now being a Christian is not merely saying that we are one, but now we have to live as one. To be Christ like, to represent who he is and what he has done.

In order for us to even try to care and/or love one another, we need to renew our minds and our way of life, we also need to learn to put aside our self-centeredness, egos and pride to fulfill this commandment.

Can we love our neighbors?
Can we love the people who wrong us?
Can we love your ex-wife, ex-husband?
Can we love our dictating boss?
Can we love the way Christ loved us? And is it possible?

St. Paul talks about renewing of the mind and love in the following texts
Romans 12:2-3, 9-16
2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. 3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.

9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.

Reading this all I can say is wow, talking about bring us down from our high horse. But it’s true we need not to be proud and conceited, we should be willing to renew our minds and love must be sincere.

Here is a great example of the love Christ has for his people (conversion of ST. Paul)
Saul “went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues……., so that if he found any……who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners…….” Somehow Jesus saw more in Saul he chose him to be an instrument to reach the gentiles. He use a man who hated the followers of Christ, hated the name of Jesus– but yet Jesus saved him, changed his mind , renew his heart – all this because Christ’s love- Jesus being who he is loved the sinners and saw something in them remember we are all sinners, we all need his love, it’s not right to only love the so call righteous. Remember his words. “…..I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” – Amen to that if not we all wouldn’t be here.

You see when we are called to love- it is a call to witness. We are called to be Disciples of Christ.

Are you willing to be that person to put aside who you are to do what Christ calls us to do?
Are you willing to open your arms, your home, the church to someone you don’t know or someone whom seem not right , are you willing call your enemies, your ex-wife, ex-husband why not your mother-in-law, to pray with them to share the Love that Christ has shown us?

St Paul was on the money when he stated this 1 Corinthians 9:22: To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. This is what Jesus meant by love one another, as I loved you.

We have been given Salvation, Love, Forgiveness- we should be willing and ready to put our life on the line to share Christ’s love to those who we love and more to those we don’t know.

Christ was born, he lived, worked, fed the hungry, healed the Sick and was beaten and suffer on the cross for us to give us freedom from our sins, freedom from death, freedom from damnation, why should we hold out this great blessing.

On the cross he forgave us of our sins saying;
Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do – now go Love one another

He forgave a thief
Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise – now go Love one another

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me– he took the sins of the world unto himself now go Love one another.

The blessing on the Cross needs to be shared, the people need to know how much he loves us and what he has done and will do for us- put aside your fear of loving and caring for one another. GO love as Christ loves you.

Let us pray:
Almighty God, grant us steadfast in faith in Jesus Christ, a cheerful hope in Your mercy, and a sincere love for You, and one another; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen
